Last week H. and I made a trip to the sea. We stayed in a nice little bed & breakfast in the town of Bergen in the province of North-Holland. We made some trips in the area. And we saw a lot if this…
Fields of tulips……everywhere….
Even though the weather was not that great, it was breathtaking.
Even though my country is known for it’s tulips, tulips originate from Turkey. The tulips were brought to the Netherlands in the period that is known as the Golden Age, the 16/17th century. The Dutch loved the tulips so much it started a hype, a tulipmania. Some tulips were as a expensive as an Amsterdam canal house. Can you imagine?
Historical tulips can be seen at the Hortus Bulborum in Limmen. Some of them orginate from the 16th century. We haven’t been there yet, but I really would like to visit the hortus next year. You can buy some of their tulips online.
The Keukenhof in Lisse is another place where you see tulips and other beautiful flowers. Another one on my wish list.
The tulips we saw are in an area called De Zijpe, but there are also tulip fields in the northern part of the Netherlands.
A tulip from our garden.
